Today we spent most of the day at the NICU in order to maximize feeding and snuggling opportunities with Eirik. His progress continues by leaps and bounds!
Eirik has made a lot of steps in the right direction today:
1. Eirik's gavage feeding tube has been removed and he's continuing to take meals at Hooter's and off the bottle. He's a little chowhound, and judging from the "downloads" that get measured, he's right on target for the food that he is taking.
2. Eirik's blood sugar readings are good. This means he's getting enough chow.
3. Eirik's intravenous lines have all been disconnected. The PICC (peripherally inserted central catheter) line that runs from his arm almost to his heart will still stay in until he's able to show at least 3 good blood sugar readings. Once those are done, which will probably be tonight, the PICC line will be removed and we'll finally have a wireless baby!
Other news:
Eirik will be starting him on some vitamin supplements that, according to his NICU nurse, taste absolutely awful and are a far cry from the tasty Flintstones vitamins that Kelly takes in place of her yucky prenatal vitamins.
He'll be doing a carseat test tomorrow which involves strapping him into his carseat and monitoring his breathing and heart rate to make sure that he's ready to hit the road and will do ok on the longest short car ride that Kelly and Otis will ever make.
We're getting closer to getting home!
